So, when is a used car a better deal than a brand new vehicle?

Good question.

The first thing to look at is how much bang for your buck? If your budget is limited, a used car in good condition can offer you more space, more features and certainly a better price range that a new car with a small price.

Also, many used cars are one-owner vehicles and are usually in better shape than the average used car.

So, what should one look for when deciding to buy a decent used car?

• Well, the first thing should be mileage.  If a car has close to 200K miles on it, you should probably pass.

• If the mileage is decent, then the “big stuff” under the hood is next on the list. This means the engine, and engine parts, the radiator, etc.

• The next thing to check for is any kind of leakage.  Is the oil leaking? Water? Coolant? Is the transmission leaking? Or the brakes?

If you are not an automobile expert, make sure you bring a friend with you that is. A good mechanic can immediately tell if an engine is in alignment or if the oil leak is massive.

Remember:  buying a bad used car is like throwing your money into a landfill. But buying a good used car is something that can last you a very, very long time.
